OPC vs PPC Cement — Does Bag Count Change for Your Project?
Understand how OPC and PPC differ for Indian house construction and why bag quantity estimates stay the same when only the cement type changes.
At the hardware shop the question comes up constantly: OPC ya PPC? For quantity estimation, the answer is simpler than the marketing — a 50 kg bag is still one bag, and volume per bag is the same for mix calculations.
What OPC and PPC are

Both are sold in 50 kg bags in India. Major brands pack OPC and PPC in the same bag weight class.
Does PPC change cement bag count?
No — for the same mix ratio and volume, cement bags needed are the same whether you order OPC or PPC.
Mix design is by volume or weight of cement content, not brand name. M20 for 1 m³ wet concrete still needs the same number of 50 kg bags in a nominal mix estimate — whether those bags are OPC or PPC.
What changes:
- Price per bag (PPC often slightly cheaper in many markets)
- Setting time / workability (mason preference)
- Specification on your drawing (“OPC 53 Grade” vs “PPC”)
What does not change in our calculators:

When the drawing specifies OPC
Structural notes may require OPC 43/53 for RCC. In that case you still calculate how many bags the same way — you just order OPC instead of PPC. Quantity math is unchanged.
When PPC is common
Many builders use PPC for plaster, brick mortar, and non-specified general work, and OPC only where the engineer insists. That is a procurement split, not two different bag-count formulas.

Is PPC weaker than OPC?
Not simply “weaker” — different strength development over time. Follow the grade on the bag (43/53) and the structural spec. Do not swap types against engineer instructions.
Does PPC need more bags for plaster?
