Cement Bag Sizes in India — 50 kg and Conversions

Understand standard cement bag sizes sold in India and how to convert between bags, cubic feet, and cubic metres.

Almost every concrete or plaster estimate in India ends with the same question: kitne bags? The answer depends on knowing what a bag actually is — and converting bags to volume so sand and aggregate orders stay in sync.

The standard bag: 50 kg

In India, the 50 kg cement bag is the default unit for site work, godown stock, and most rate quotes. When a contractor says “40 bags for the slab,” they mean forty bags of 50 kg unless they specifically say otherwise.

You will also see 25 kg bags in some retail and small-job markets — useful for patch plaster, tiny repairs, or DIY work where a full 50 kg bag would go stale. For house construction and continuous pours, sites still think and order in 50 kg.

Why 50 kg became the norm

Cement is sold by weight. Fifty kilograms is heavy but still handleable by one or two labourers, stacks neatly on lorries, and matches how estimators convert volume to bags using a standard bulk density. Over decades, rate analysis, PWD-style estimation sheets, and supplier billing all locked onto the 50 kg unit. Changing the bag size would break every habit on site, so the industry stayed put.

How much volume is one 50 kg bag?

For estimation, cement bulk density is commonly taken as 1440 kg/m³.

Volume of one 50 kg bag:

50 ÷ 1440 ≈ 0.0347 m³

In cubic feet (1 m³ ≈ 35.315 cft):

0.0347 × 35.315 ≈ 1.23 cft

In litres (1 m³ = 1000 litres):

0.0347 × 1000 ≈ 34.7 litres

These are cement volume numbers — the space that bag of powder occupies when measured as cement — not the volume of mixed concrete you get from one bag. Concrete volume depends on the full mix (cement + sand + aggregate + water).

Going the other way: if you need 1 m³ of cement (rare as a pure cement order — usually you need cement in a mix), that is about 1 ÷ 0.0347 ≈ 29 bags.

25 kg bags — when they make sense

  • Small bathroom redo or crack filling
  • Trial mixes or sample pours
  • Sites with no storage where a 50 kg bag would absorb moisture before use

Convert carefully: two 25 kg bags = one 50 kg bag by weight. Do not assume every “bag” in a WhatsApp quote is 50 kg — ask.

Bags vs concrete volume (do not confuse them)

A common mix-up: “I need 1 m³ of concrete, so I need about 29 bags.” That would be true only if the cubic metre were pure cement. For M20 concrete, cement is only one part of the mix. Storage tips that affect real bag count

  • Stack on wooden planks or a dry platform, not bare soil
  • Cover against rain; wet cement cakes and loses strength
  • Use older bags first (FIFO)
  • Do not buy months ahead for a small job — moisture and theft eat “extra” bags

Wastage of 2–5% from torn bags and leftover mix is normal; large gaps usually mean wrong volume math, not bad luck.

FAQ

Is PPC or OPC sold in the same 50 kg bag?

Yes — both commonly come in 50 kg bags. The bag weight is the same; the cement type and strength grade (e.g. 43/53 for OPC) are what change. Follow the drawing or engineer for type.

Why does my supplier’s “bag volume” differ slightly from 1.23 cft?

Bulk density assumptions vary a little (some sheets use rounded figures). For ordering, stay consistent with one conversion — and round up when you convert to whole bags.

Can I order cement by the tonne?

Yes. One tonne = 1000 kg = 20 bags of 50 kg. Some dealers quote per tonne; divide by 20 to get bags.

Does bag size change for white cement or specialty cement?

Specialty products sometimes use different pack sizes. Always read the bag. Ordinary grey cement for structural work is still dominated by 50 kg packs.
