Brick Wall Cost per Sq Ft — Material Estimate for Indian Masonry
Estimate mortar cement, sand, and rough ₹ per sq ft of wall face for 4.5-inch and 9-inch brick walls using modular Indian bricks.
Brick wall quotes often mix brick supply, mortar, labour, and scaffolding into one rate. To check the material portion, you need bricks per sq ft of wall face plus mortar cement and sand — then optional ₹ cost for mortar only.
Bricks per sq ft (modular 190 mm brick)
For a 9-inch (one-brick) wall with 10 mm joints, face area of 1 sq ft needs roughly 10–11 modular bricks before wastage. A 4.5-inch (half-brick) partition needs about half that — around 5–6 bricks per sq ft of face.
Full method: how many bricks per square foot.
Mortar cost per sq ft of wall face
Mortar fills the gaps between bricks. For a 9-inch wall, 1 sq ft of face × 9 inches thick ≈ 0.019 m³ wall volume. After deducting solid brick volume, mortar is on the order of 0.003–0.004 m³ wet per sq ft of face — small but adds up on a whole house.
At 1:6 mortar, a 10 ft × 10 ft × 9-inch wall (100 sq ft face) needs on the order of 2–3 cement bags and 8–12 cft sand for mortar (run the exact wall in the calculator).
Mortar material only @ ₹400/bag + ₹55/cft: often ₹3–8 per sq ft of wall face depending on thickness and ratio — bricks themselves are extra.
Worked example — 10 ft × 10 ft, 9-inch wall
| Item | Approximate | |------|-------------| | Face area | 100 sq ft | | Bricks (before 5% wastage) | ~1,070 | | Cement bags (mortar, 1:6) | ~25–30 | | Sand (cft) | ~100–120 | | Mortar material cost | ~₹15,000–18,000 |
Per sq ft of face (mortar only): ~₹150–180 — still excluding brick purchase and labour.
Brick cost varies by region (often ₹6–12 per brick delivered). For 1,070 bricks at ₹8 each → ₹8,560 → ~₹86/sq ft brick cost alone.
Combined material benchmark (very rough)
| Wall type | Material-only hint / sq ft face | |-----------|-------------------------------| | 9-inch outer wall | ₹130–200+ (bricks + mortar) | | 4.5-inch partition | ₹70–120+ |
Labour for brickwork is commonly ₹25–45 per sq ft of face on many North/Central India sites — verify locally.
FAQ
Does this include plaster?
No. Plaster is a separate stage — see plastering rate per sq ft.
Should I deduct doors and windows?
Yes for accurate brick count. The Brick Calculator does not deduct openings — subtract their area or run separate wall segments.
1:4 vs 1:6 mortar — cost difference?
Richer 1:4 uses more cement per cubic metre of mortar → higher cost, stronger mortar. Most general brick walls use 1:6 unless specified otherwise.
