How Many Bricks Per Square Foot (and Per m²)?

Estimate brick counts for masonry walls using standard Indian modular brick size, mortar joints, and wall dimensions.

“How many bricks for this wall?” is asked on every house site. The accurate answer is not a fixed “X bricks per square foot” for every wall — it depends on brick size, mortar joint, and wall thickness. Here is the method estimators use with Indian modular bricks.

Brick sizes you will meet

Two sizes come up often:

  1. Modular brick (IS standard): 190 × 90 × 90 mm — this is what modern estimation prefers
  2. Traditional / “standard” brick: often around 230 × 110 × 70–75 mm — still common with local kilns

This guide uses the modular 190 × 90 × 90 mm brick. If your supplier delivers traditional bricks, the count per square foot changes — measure one brick and redo the math.

Why “bricks per sq ft” alone is incomplete

A wall has thickness. A 4.5-inch (half-brick) wall and a 9-inch (one-brick) wall covering the same face area need very different brick counts because the volume of masonry is different.

Better approach:

  1. Find wall volume (or face area × thickness)
  2. Find volume of one brick with mortar
  3. Divide

Rules of thumb like “50 bricks per m²” exist for specific thickness and size — use them only when those assumptions match your wall.

Modular brick + mortar joint

With a 10 mm mortar joint (common assumption):

Brick with mortar (along length and height for face work; thickness depends on how the brick is laid):

For volume method, take:

Brick with mortar = (190+10) × (90+10) × (90+10) mm
= 200 × 100 × 100 mm
= 0.002 m³ per brick unit in the wall

Solid brick volume without joint = 0.190 × 0.090 × 0.090 ≈ 0.00154 m³ — used later if you estimate mortar separately.

Step-by-step count

Number of bricks ≈ wall volume ÷ volume of one brick with mortar

Then:

  • Round up to a whole number
  • Add about 5% for breakage and cutting (see below)

Worked example: 10 ft × 10 ft wall, 9-inch thick

Wall face: 10 ft × 10 ft
Thickness: 9 inches (one-brick wall, common for outer walls)

Convert to metres:

  • 10 ft ≈ 3.05 m
  • 9 inches = 9 × 0.0254 ≈ 0.229 m (often taken as 0.23 m)

Wall volume = 3.05 × 3.05 × 0.23 ≈ 2.14 m³

Bricks (modular, 10 mm joint) = 2.14 ÷ 0.002 ≈ 1070 bricks

Add 5% breakage: 1070 × 1.05 ≈ 1124 → order about 1,125–1,150 bricks

Same wall in “per square foot” language

Face area = 100 sq ft.
Bricks before wastage ≈ 1070 → about 10.7 bricks per sq ft of face for this 9-inch modular wall.

That number is not universal. A half-brick (4.5-inch) partition would need roughly half the volume and far fewer bricks per sq ft of face.

Why add 5% for breakage?

Bricks crack in transit, chip at corners, and get cut around doors, windows, and junctions. Masons also reject underburnt or damaged pieces. The 5% (sometimes 5–10% on rough sites) is a practical buffer so you do not stop the wall for a half-day waiting for a tempo of bricks. Skip it only if you already have surplus stock on site.

Mortar: cement and sand for brickwork

Bricks alone are not the full indent. Mortar fills the joints. A common mortar ratio for brickwork is 1:6 (cement : sand), though 1:4 or 1:5 appears in some specs.

Rough method:

  1. Mortar wet volume ≈ wall volume − (number of bricks × solid brick volume)
  2. Dry volume ≈ wet × 1.33
  3. Split by cement : sand ratio → 50 kg bags and sand in cft

Openings and openings you forgot

Deduct volume (or area × thickness) for:

  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Large ventilators

A 10×10 face with a big window is not 100 sq ft of brickwork. Forgetting openings is how people over-order by hundreds of bricks.

Always recalculate if brick size or thickness changes.

How many bricks per square foot for a 4.5-inch wall?

Roughly half the 9-inch count for the same face area, because thickness is half — around 5–6 modular bricks per sq ft before wastage, depending on joint and actual thickness. Run the volume method once instead of memorising conflicting WhatsApp numbers.

Should I use modular or traditional brick size in the formula?

Use whatever is actually delivered. Ask the supplier for length × width × height in mm, then add the joint.

Does the 5% cover window cuttings?

It covers ordinary breakage and cutting. Large openings should still be deducted from wall volume; 5% is not a substitute for that deduction.

What mortar ratio for brick walls?

1:6 is a common default for many non-special walls. Damp areas, load-bearing details, or the structural spec may require richer mortar. Follow the drawing when it exists.
