M15 and PCC Concrete — When to Use and How Much Cement
Learn where lean M15 and PCC mixes fit in Indian house construction, how they differ from M20 slab concrete, and how to estimate quantities.
Not every pour on a house site is M20 RCC. M15 and PCC (plain cement concrete) show up under floors, around footings, and for leveling — leaner mixes with less cement per cubic metre. Using the wrong grade wastes money or strength.
Where M15 / PCC appears on site

Main RCC slabs, columns, and beams usually need M20 or higher per structural design — do not substitute M15 to save cement.
M15 mix ratio
Nominal M15 = 1 : 2 : 4 (cement : sand : aggregate). Total 7 parts.
Compared to M20 (1:1.5:3, total 5.5 parts), M15 has less cement per m³ of dry volume — cheaper per cubic metre, lower strength.
Worked example — 1 m³ wet PCC
Wet volume = 1 m³ (e.g. 10 m × 10 m × 10 mm bed)
Dry volume = 1 × 1.54 = 1.54 m³
Cement share (M15): 1.54 × (1/7) ≈ 0.22 m³ → ~6.3 bags (50 kg)
Same wet volume in M20 would need ~8 bags — M15 saves roughly 1–2 bags per m³ but is not interchangeable structurally.
M10 — even leaner
M10 = 1 : 3 : 6 (10 parts). Used for bulk fill and very lean PCC. Fewer bags still — only where strength requirement is minimal.
How to estimate
- Measure length × width × thickness of the PCC strip or bed
- Pick M10 or M15 (match drawing or engineer note)

Is PCC the same as M15?
On many residential sites, “PCC” verbally means a lean plain concrete — often M10 or M15. The drawing grade wins; ask if it says “PCC 1:4:8” or “M15” explicitly.
Can I pour M15 instead of M20 for a small slab?
Not if the slab is structural RCC. Downgrading grade without engineer approval is unsafe.
Why does the calculator show more sand than cement?
All nominal mixes are mostly sand and aggregate by volume. Cement is the smallest fraction — even in M15.
